Interview 101: Take the Water

In the height of our relocation adventure comes the challenge of myself finding a job.

I have put out nearly twenty resumes with multiple emails back, "we have decided to more forward with another candidate".

Job hunting is a full time job on top of your real full time job. I swear it takes skill or some sort of super power to land a position that you can't wait to start.

With that being said, I am eager about the opportunity I have had to interview with an amazing company and will be returning for another interview next week!

Here are my top three realizations I have found through my job search and interview process.

1. Take the water.

As I was offered bottled water in the lobby, I gladly accepted. I thought, "why wouldn't you accept this gesture?" I used to always say "no thank you" because I felt my acceptance would make me seem needy and unprepared.

Listen, you are about to embark in a straight hour (or more) of conversation in a setting where it is not appropriate to bring your own water bottle. Take the water.

I can especially testify to why this is so important because with about 10 minutes left in my interview I experienced an extreme dry throat...you know the one where it is almost impossible to talk and your eyes start to water uncontrollably.

That water saved my interview and possible my life. Again I say, take the water.

2. Know Your Worth

With my growing experience (and age) in my career I have finally learned my worth in the industry and my career. I have already had to make a decision that a certain "entry-level" position wasn't for me. That's okay. Always weigh the positives and negatives; but don't let the fear of not having a job force you into something you know are above.

3. Make Them Want You

This time my job search has been so incredibly different. I remember a few years ago interviewing and thinking "I really hope they want me". Now, I really hope I want them! A company that is a great fit for my goals, interests, and even life outside of work is what I am looking for. I feel it is okay to stand firm on finding what is important to me.

My job hunt is not over, I do not have an offer yet but am patiently waiting and praying.

I have found the process to be so much less stressful than before because of my confidence in myself, my experience, and in what I want out of a career.

Happy Hunting!

xoxo

Ashley
