As 2018 begins so many things are changing. January 1st, 2018 at about 5:00pm is the start of DeVante and I's new life: The life of a police family.
Tae left for his first week of the police academy tonight. Thankfully we had a long weekend with no set plans or out of town trips so we had time to relax, enjoy each other, and see friends. I couldn't of asked for a better weekend with him but what's the saying?...
"Like all good things, it must come to an end."
It was hard to not spend today counting down until he had to leave. I could tell he was anxious but also excited. His exact words this afternoon were "I go to the police academy tonight! Wtf. Three years later."
Hearing him say that literally made me glow with pride. It is really hard to believe we are here but boy is he right, it has been a long time coming. DeVante told me three years ago he wanted to be a police officer. At that time we had been together for about a year and being who I am I told him to shoot for greatness and follow his dreams. I was completely smitten by him and believed he could do anything.
It was only a few months later he was taking his first police exam trying for his dream career. Since then, he has taken many more exams, had interviews, and background checks but nothing seemed to be the right fit. He was dedicated and persistent through the whole process which made me truly realize his passion. Finally, just last month, he got a very unexpected call from a police department that he had applied to. They wanted to offer him a job!
We are ecstatic. I really think we have been in shock since that call. Watching him attempt this goal for so long and now realizing that he is reaching it is something I can hardly describe. But I have never been prouder.
NEW LIFE:
The next few months will be difficult. DeVante will be away from home at the academy during the week. The weekends will be our cherished time.
We will eventually be moving to the city where his department is located so in the meantime, I have a lot to do. We need to find a new home and I need to find a new job!
2018 will be one to remember but I for one, can not wait.
We need a clean slate, a fresh start. And I can't think of a more exciting, rewarding way to do so. We are ready for this challenging adventure. Bring on 2018.
